Senior Safari ~ Fundraising for Children with Cancer

Vera Entwisle founded Camp Quality in 1983 and served as its CEO for 17 years. She now serves on the board of the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. Her husband Brian has a Masters Degree in Education and has taught school for many years. He has served as Camp Quality Training Officer for ten years, where he has been responsible for producing training materials for volunteers and conducting workshops.

In the course of their fundraising work within Australia, Vera and Brian met many people who were looking for a challenge and an involvement in the community. Some of these were retirees who had skills to offer but who seemed to be a forgotten segment of the community. This, combined with the experience of watching children with cancer enduring horrendous medical treatment, led to the idea for Senior Safari to help raise funds to find a cure for cancer in children.

Click here to visit the Sydney Children's Hospital WebsiteThe Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation is the principal fundraising body for the Sydney Children's Hospital, and is dedicated to working with the community to improve the quality of life for seriously ill children. The Foundation facilitates community support for the Hospital, raising funds to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment, to financially support life-saving services and training programs as well as medical and child health research.

The inaugural Senior Safari event was held in May 2001 to raise funds for research into a cure for childhood cancer. It took the form of a five day outback adventure in and around Balranald for active mature motorists.

Senior Safari held a successful bush dance at Old Mogo Town in early August 2001, which raised a significant amount of money for the Foundation. Here are some photos of the event.

Letter from the Prime Minister

"I am happy to support the inaugural Senior Safari. This event provides older Australians not only the opportunity to take part in an exciting new challenge but also to raise significant funds for the very worthwhile cause of children's cancer research.

"I commend each participant in the Safari. The fund raising goals set by you are admirable and will support children with cancer in very specific ways. All of us hope that the day will soon come when a cure for cancer is found. Your support of this event brings that day forward.

"The Government has a strong commitment to supporting quality of lifestyle for older Australians and recognises the significant contribution you have mande and will continue to make to the community. It is my hope that you will enjoy your participation in the Safari and the help you are providing to some very special children in our community.

"Congratulations to the organisers of the Senior Safari and I extend my very best wishes for a successful event."

Signed: John Howard, Prime Minister.
