Page 5 ~ Some Observations About Gold

  • Gold reached a peak of $A870 per oz. in the late 1970s. In July 2000 it was about A$450. You can check the price at any time in the newspaper.

  • Gold is said to be so rare that the world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since time began.

  • The amount of gold nuggets found in the world account for less than 1% of all gold discovered.

  • An authentic gold nugget has long been considered a gemstone because of its rarity and beauty.

  • Two of the largest nuggets found in Australia were the "Easter Day", (found in 1976), weighing 53.75 kilograms and "The Hand of Faith" (found in 1980), weighing 38 kilograms.

  • Australia is the 7th largest gold producing country in the world. America, China, Russia and South Africa are the major producers.

  • Gold is so heavy that one cubic foot weighs half a ton and it can be hammered so thin that sunlight can shine through it.

  • A single troy oz. of gold (31.1035 grams) can be drawn into a wire 100 kilometres long.

  • Gold is so soft that it is seldom used in its pure form. Jewellery marked 10K is made up of 10 parts gold and 14 parts other metals.

  • The hardness of gold, (on Moh's scale), is 2.5- 3.0. Its melting point is 2,063 degrees Fahrenheit and its specific gravity is 19.7.

  • Gold is chemically liquefied and injected into the muscles of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.
